Admissions Test

Cambridge Computer Science applicants take the TMUA. Register separately from UCAS and check UAT-UK for booking deadlines and test arrangements.

Structure

The test has two papers, each with 20 multiple-choice questions and 75 minutes. Calculators are not allowed.

Paper 1 covers applying mathematical knowledge; Paper 2 covers mathematical reasoning. There is no pass/fail score, and universities consider results alongside the rest of the application.

The reasoning strand

Practise necessary and sufficient conditions, converses, contrapositives, quantifiers and proof methods. Be able to find an invalid step in an argument even when its conclusion is true.

Where the marks go

Check domains and restrictions before accepting a solution. For

log⁡2x+log⁡2(x−2)=3,\log_2 x + \log_2 (x - 2) = 3,

the algebra gives roots 44 and −2-2, but the logarithms require x>2x > 2, so only 44 is valid.

Preparation

Use the official specification, logic notes and practice materials. Work under timed conditions, then review mistakes by topic and cause. Practise calculator-free arithmetic as well as unfamiliar problems.

The CSAT

Peterhouse and Trinity also require the CSAT. Check the Cambridge course page and your College's instructions.

On the day

Follow the test centre's ID and arrival requirements. Wrong answers do not lose marks, so attempt every question.
